Do you ever hear a song that just makes you stop in your tracks? That was me the first time I heard “Poppies” by KNGDAVD; it was catchy, the beats were unlike anything else I was listening to, and from the very first notes I wanted to know more and wanted to know who was behind the music that immediately sucked me in. I already mentioned that these guys were worth keeping an eye on in 2017, but today I’m unbelievably happy to say that I got a chance to chat with the boys and share that interview with you today. So let’s dive in and find out what they think about genres, digital streaming, and more!
Manda @ Headphone Couture: Hey, thanks so much for joining me today! For new readers and listeners who might be meeting you for the first time, would you mind introducing yourself and telling us a little bit about your sound?
KNGDAVD: Why Hello! We are KNGDAVD, also known by our real people names, Tye and Jon. Describing your own band’s sound is much like describing your own looks to someone. We may think we’re dapper-ass-individuals with chiseled jaws and a six pack of abs, while a third party may say we’re more akin to those weird sea creatures they keep finding in the darkest depths of the ocean. That being said if our music were a person it would probably be Brad Pitt in Inglorious Bastards – ballsy, brazen, and handsome as fuck.
HC: Who are some of your musical influences and inspirations? Is there anyone in particular you’d love to work with?
KNGDAVD: We’re into such vastly different music from one another. Honestly, it’s a miracle we agree on anything. Car rides are a nightmare. Tye loves 90s rnb, Jon loves classic rock etc etc. We can agree on Queen and early Kelly Clarkson, though.
HC: So what do you enjoy most about making music? Do you have a preference between studio time and performing live?
Jon: Studio. All day everyday. When I found out there was a job where you could sit in a room all day with a bunch of toys and record noise into a computer my life changed. Besides, playing live in NYC sucks.
Tye: I find both enjoyable but I’d say Live is by far my favorite- to just go out and sing my ass off is really fun to me … i think that’s what I’m most excited about for KNGDAVD is to start doing more shows and just engage with an audience on some really fun songs.
HC: Your tracks have already found a pretty great audience on streaming services like Spotify so far, has that had any impact on your approach to choosing which singles to debut or how to navigate the industry as a whole?
KNGDAVD: Nah. We make what we make and if people like it cool and if not fuck em. The music industry is a lot like dating, if you care what people think about you no one’s ever going to like you.
HC: Last but not least, time for the tough one: you get five tracks to create the perfect mix tape. Which songs do you pick?
Tye: damn… good question. For Me :
1. Aerosmith- Dream On
2. Annie Lennox- No More I love you’s
3. Kelly Clarkson- Since U Been Gone
4. Rhye- Open
5. TLC- Creep
Jon: I like albums, so i’m going to take that option (not that you gave us an option)
1. Radiohead – In Rainbows
2. The Beatles – Abby Road
3. The Beatles – Revolver
4. Led Zeppelin I
5. Bon Iver – For Emma For Ever Ago
Thank you so much to Tye and Jon for joining me, and I think “Brad Pitt from Inglorious Basterds” might possibly be my favorite description of someone’s sound ever. I’m so glad to have gotten the chance to get to know the guys a little better, and I hope you all enjoyed it too!
